After updating my Mac to OS 10.6.7, I ran into a problem where the bluetooth on the computer would completely fail. I tried many times to disconnect and re-connect my mouse and keyboard, but the problem still persisted.
I tried deleting the pairing and re-pairing the devices, but I would get the following message:
”The pairing attempt was unsuccessful. This configuration of Mac OS X and Bluetooth software could be invalid or unsupported.”
Resetting the SMC seemed to fix the problem.
To summarize the steps listed in the link, do the following to reset the SMC on your MacBook:
Shut down the computer. Ensure that the MagSafe power adapter is connected to the computer. On the built-in keyboard, press the left Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. Release all keys and the power button at the same time. Press the power button to turn on the computer. Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
Resetting the SMC is different from type to type of Mac you have.

The SMC reset on my Mactel 8,2 certainly is the fix. I have a triple boot system of WIn7,Ubuntu 10.10 and Mac OSX and bouncing between them sometimes does cause the BT Mac key/mouse to do funky things. (Amazingly, "funky" in OS X only. Ubuntu and Win7 are rock solid – even in clamshell mode). So the SMC on the Macbook Pro is exactly as you describe: Shut down, unplug the power adapter for 5-10 seconds, restart in OS X, then everything's great again. Wish there was a terminal command that would do this instead of a power down/power up. Thanks for the info – found ur blog via Google search and will bookmark for future use!

My mac couldn't connect to keyboard or mouse via bluetooth, which is how i found this site. i changed the batteries (didnt work) but then reset the system and it worked. Previosuly i had intermittent connection but the system was telling me keyboard and mouse were at 100% battery. I'm actually wondering whether my batteries were out but for some reason it was telling me I was at 100% which I clearly wasn't. Anyway I'm rambling. But Thank you!

Here is a kicker: How do I reset the SMC if my left side 'shift' , 'control' and 'option' keys are broken (which is why I am trying to install a bluetooth keyboard in the first place). I have a late 2009 macbook pro – the one that says you 'shouldn't' remove the battery.
